The patented SolarX|Works SolarXOS DC control system prioritizes power input and intelligently distributes power throughout your system as needed based on key factors such as learned usage patterns, time of day, power rates, weather patterns, or user defined profiles such as “make me money” to prioritize selling back to the energy grid.
How does SolarXOS work?
The SolarXOS power management and operating system sits in the middle between your power sources (solar, battery bank, grid, etc.) and where the power is being consumed. SolarXOS then manages what sources the power is coming from based on user-defined priority, available supply from each source, and demand on the output side. The system will then smartly distribute the power to where there is demand within the system—allowing you to setup zones to help prioritize which power goes to which devices. SolarXOS helps you better manage you power consumption by increasing energy use efficiency and reducing costs by minimizing non-renewable energy use.
Why Direct current (DC)?
Thomas Edison, proponent of direct current (DC), and Nikola Tesla, proponent of alternating current (AC), fought over which current was better in the late 1800s. Tesla and alternating current eventually became the winner and is what makes up our current energy grid—as it was easier to transform and transport long distances.
However, looking at today’s energy supply and demand, things are changing rapidly. Renewable energy sources are becoming a larger and more important source of power. PV solar panels produces DC power, which has to be inverted to AC to be used in most cases, resulting in 15-30% energy loss. At the same time, more and more of your daily energy consumptions comes from devices that run on DC. Computers, phones, televisions, LED lights all run on DC power, resulting in further energy loss. If you have solar on the roof of your house and you are working on your computer, you are taking DC power from the panels, inverting it to AC to power your home, then rectifying it back to DC to power your computer. Think of how much energy could be saved if you didn’t have to do this! If you ran direct DC from the panels to your devices, you would need less panels and overall battery storage—saving you money!
